Qn.no;12. How creative teachers need to be to use
Educational Media and Technology in classroom to teach form six topic of a
choice?
Educational
media is a type of media that is used
to educate people. Educational media can include computer programs, television
shows and radio broadcasts.
Technology is application of knowledge to the
practical aims of human life or changing and manipulates a human environment.
Technology includes the use of materials, tools, techniques, sources of power
to make life easier or more pleasant and work more productive
In
the 21st Century technological advances has exploded. Schools have not been
left out in these advancements. Classroom
technology has become increasingly more popular. The following five
technological tools are must haves for the classroom of today. Each tool
provides teachers with a method in which they can actively engage their students
in the learning process. Today's students are digital natives and as such use
of technology in education has proven to be effective. The following are the
tools that creative teacher may use when teaching:-
The creative teacher should know how to use internet, the internet is arguably the
greatest technological invention of all time. The explosion of the Internet and
its capabilities has provided resources to teachers that were unimaginable just
a generation ago. There are so many potential educational uses of the Internet
that it is virtually impossible for a single teacher to tap into all of them.
It provides information both beneficial and detrimental to students with easier
access than ever with a simple click. The information available to students online
is vast. Teachers who use it appropriately can actively engage their students
on a daily basis in ways never imagined a short time ago.
The creative teacher should know how to use LCD
projector, a
mounted LCD projector allows a teacher the opportunity to share activities,
videos and Power Point presentations, from
their computer with the whole class. In the technological age, an LCD projector
is a must have in a classroom. It is a powerful tool because it allows a single
computer to become a powerful tool in a large group setting. A teacher can put
an entire lesson together on a Power Point presentation and actively engage
their students within the lesson by putting it up on the LCD projector.
Also the teacher may use document camera when teaching, a document camera
works in conjunction with LCD projector. A document camera essentially has
taken the place of the old overhead projectors. With a document camera, you no
longer need transparencies. You simply put the document you want to show your
students under the camera, and it is shot up on the screen through LCD
projector. Once it is up on the screen you can use the camera to take a screen
shot of the document and save it directly to your computer for later or just
use the live version. A document camera also allows you to place diagrams,
charts and textbooks on a large screen so that all the students can see the
images and passages at one time. The camera also broadcasts in color, so if you
want to show the students an example of a color wheel, they will see exactly
what the original looks like.
Smart Board may also be used by the creative teachers to teach their
students, smart boards are becoming increasingly popular. Students love to
interact with technology based educational tools. A smart board takes place of
a traditional chalk board or white board. It is essentially a white board with
technological capabilities that allow teacher and students to interact in ways
they had previously not been able too. Teachers can create engaging, active
lessons using the many tools that a smart board provides. They can transpose
diagrams, charts, and templates, have students come up and actively participate in the lesson, and then print
anything such as notes that were completed on a particular day and given to
students as a handout. Learning to use a smart board correctly does require
some training, but teachers who use them regularly say that notice their
students are enthusiastic when they create a lesson that implements the smart
board.
Digital Camera is the other tool that a teacher may use when teaching, digital
cameras have been around for a while, but you don’t often find them used in a
classroom setting. Today’s digital cameras also have video capabilities that
could bring another dimension to your classroom. A digital camera could be used
in a variety of ways to engage students in the learning process. A science teacher may have students take
pictures of different trees that can be found within their community. Then the
students identify those trees from the pictures and build a Power Point
presentation giving more information about each specific type of tree. A reading teacher could assign her students
to act out one scene from Romeo and Juliet and then record that scene to play
back and discuss different aspects of that particular scene. Teachers who use
this technology find that students will work hard to learn because they enjoy
the interaction with the camera and the fact that it is a different style of
teaching and learning.
Productivity
tools, every teacher should be proficient in the use of productivity tools.
Teachers should have to process many different types of data. Productivity
tools(word processor, spread sheet, data base and presentation soft ware)
Trouble
shooting every teacher should be able to troubleshoot technology related
problems that commonly crop up in the classroom, for example, you should know
that when a computer is behaving oddly in anyway the simplest solution often is
to turn off the computer and turn it back on. Sometimes plugs work loose from
their sockets or disks get stuck in drives.
Technical
assistance. Every teacher should know where to go for technical assistance,
because sometimes technical problems arise that are beyond a teacher’s
competence. Good schools will have response and skilled technical staff
available full time.
Web
resources. Every teacher should be familiar with what is available on the web
in his or her subject area. The web is magnificent recourses for teaching and
learning and getting better by the day.
Search
skills, every teacher should have well honed web searching skills. Searching
the web has become an essential skill for all computer users. Almost anything
you can imagine is available on the web if you only know how to find it.
The creative teacher must use different technology
or media which can be used to teach form six topic such as the topic of
communication in General studies, the sub topic is barriers of communication. The technology which may be
used to teach such subtopic are like
digital learning tools like projector, computer, hand held devices like phones,
audio and audio visual.
Communication can be defined as a transactional
process that involves an exchange of ideas, information, feelings and attitude
or believes and impression. Apart from meaning of communication, the followings
are the barriers of communication:
Apart from technological skills the teacher should also have teaching skills as follows;
§How to prepare for teaching before
classroom
§How to organize content to be taught
§How to organize tools and teaching aids
relevance to the content
§How to prepare official teaching
document, i.e. scheme of work, lesson plan.
§Consider the domain of learning i.e.
cognitive, psychomotor and affective.
Mind that teaching should generate a learner with;-
üCritical
thinking .
üAbility
to problem solving.
üGood
spiritual morals acceptable by the society.
üSelf
reliant ability and accountability.
üCapability
to compete in free employment labor market.
The selected topic is communication and sub-topic is
communication barrier.( form six)
A " communication barrier" or "a barrier to communication" is anything that interferes with the transfer of intended information from a sender to a receiver. This can include anything from static on a radio, preventing the listener from hearing the program, to a third party interfering in a conversation between two people. The following are the communication barrier.
Language barrier, here the message
might not be understood by the receiver hence cause problem of misunderstanding
each other, example the use of technical jargon and improper use of punctuation
marks can lead to the problem. In order to solve or avoid the problem the
creative teacher by using educational media can show differences between texts
which is well grammatical and another one not grammatical and show proper use
of punctuation marks on the right text. Example on the following sentences; “Where
is the girl in a red dress she is a beautiful charming human being on earth”.
This sentence is supposed to be written; “where is the girl in a red dress? She
is beautiful and charming human being on earth.”
Noise
barrier, where by sound of things stop a message from getting through or being
heard for example too much speaking of people, wind industries, music with high
voice.
Encoding
barriers, means the process of selecting and organizing symbols to represent a message
requires skills and knowledge. Obstacles listed below can interfere with an
effective message. For example, lack of sensitivity to receiver, lack of basic
communication skills, insufficient knowledge of the subject and information
over load.
Perceptual
barriers, in contrast, are internal. If you
go into a situation thinking that the person you are talking to isn’t going to
understand or be interested in what you have to say, you may end up subconsciously
sabotaging your effort to make your point. You will employ language that is
sarcastic, dismissive, or even obtuse, thereby alienating your conversational
partner. Think of movie scenarios in which someone yells clipped phrases at a
person they believe is deaf. The person yelling ends up looking ridiculous
while failing to communicate anything of substance.
Emotional barrier, which means
relationship between sender and receiver of communication, might adversely
affect the message which could be ignored or misinterpreted. Emotional barriers can be tough
to overcome, but are important to put aside to engage in conversations. We are
often taught to fear the words coming out of our own mouths, as in the phrase
“anything you say can and will be used against you.” Overcoming this fear is
difficult, but necessary. The trick is to have full confidence in what you are
saying and your qualifications in saying it. People often pick up on
insecurity. By believing in yourself and what you have to say, you will be able
to communicate clearly without becoming overly involved in your emotions.
Cultural barriers are a result of living in an ever shrinking world.
Different cultures, whether they be a societal culture of a race or simply the
work culture of a company, can hinder developed communication if two different
cultures clash. In these cases, it is important to find a common ground to work
from. In work situations, identifying a problem and coming up with a highly
efficient way to solve it can quickly topple any cultural or institutional
barriers. Quite simply, people like results.
Gender barriers have become less of an issue in recent years, but there is
still the possibility for a man to misconstrue the words of a woman, or vice
versa. Men and women tend to form their thoughts differently, and this must be
taken into account when communicating. This difference has to do with how the
brain of each sex is formed during gestation. In general, men are better at
spatial visualization and abstract concepts such as math, while women excel at
language-based thinking and emotional identification. However, successful
professionals in highly competitive fields tend to have similar thought
processes regardless of their gender.
Interpersonal barriers are what ultimately keep us from reaching out to each other
and opening ourselves up, not just to be heard, but to hear others. Oddly
enough, this can be the most difficult area to change. Some people spend their
entire lives attempting to overcome a poor self-image or a series of deeply
rooted prejudices about their place in the world. They are unable to form
genuine connections with people because they have too many false perceptions
blocking the way. Luckily, the cure for this is more communication. By engaging
with others, we learn what our actual strengths and weaknesses
are. This allows us to put forth our ideas in a clear, straightforward manner.
Conclusion
The teacher’s
creativeness should be done when preparing and presenting lesson, it is
important to consider the following factors;
•Environment
where learning will take place
•Background
knowledge of the learners
•Topic to
be learnt
•Availability
of resources
•Age and
cognitive capacity of learners
•Individual
sociocultural and economic differences of the learners
