  17. The technology-enabled classroom offers access to information, but it also offers many more distractions. Games on devices, text messaging, email and websites all compete for students' attention, taking that attention away from the subject on which they are supposed to be focusing. The technology can also lead to dangerous situations as students can be exposed to inappropriate online materials or predators in online places such as chat rooms.

  22. Dear kivanga may I try to say something on Technology. Technology is the wave of the future.” There’s no denying that. It’s actually the wave of the present. I know that every teacher in academe today has heard that the need to use technology in the classroom is imperative now. If we are going to engage our students in the class discussions and the lectures, we need to be doing this engagement with the technologies they are familiar with. Just last month, The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) said the same thing. In their recent reconstruction of the definition of literacy in the 21st century, NCTE focused more on the technologies that are becoming imperative to literacy education. Their definition states:

    > Because technology has increased the intensity and complexity of literate environments, the twenty-first century demands that a literate person possess a wide range of abilities and competencies, many literacies. These literacies—from reading online newspapers to participating in virtual classrooms—are multiple, dynamic, and malleable. As in the past, they are inextricably linked with particular histories, life possibilities and social trajectories of individuals and groups. Twenty-first century readers and writers need to:

    > 1. Develop proficiency with the tools of technology

    > 2. Build relationships with others to pose and solve problems collaboratively and cross-culturally

    > 3. Design and share information for global communities to meet a variety of purposes

    > 4. Manage, analyze and synthesize multiple streams of simultaneous information

    > 5. Create, critique, analyze, and evaluate multi-media texts

    > 6. Attend to the ethical responsibilities required by these complex environments

  24. TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION

    1. Technology In The Classroom Projectors SMART boards Computers Laptops Boards Technology serves as a visual aid and can be used as a teaching tool to enhance a lesson plan or objective.

    2. 21st Century Classroom. The 21st Century classroom is considered a smart classroom. A smart classroom is a classroom that has an instructor station equipped with computer and audiovisual equipment, allowing the instructor to teach using a wide variety of media. The 21st Century classroom integrates technology that students interact with everyday such as Twitter, Facebook, Podcasting, iPod, iPad, cell phone, and many more.

    3. Technology in the ClassroomTechnology is important resources to integrate curriculum. Teachers can use social media to influence students learning.Technology engages students in learning Technology equip us for global high tech society. Technology solves diversity in the classroom. Technology helps differentiate lesson plans. Technology frees the student in the learning process. Technology helps teachers assess students on what they have learned.

    4. Advantages of Technology in the Classroom Enhances the curriculum Increases flexibility of presenting material Improves lectures Backs up key concepts being taught Provides visuals of information presented Equips students to handle the technical advances in their society Teachers become more efficient with instructional time Student become more motivated

    Advantages of Technology
    5. Advantages Moments Technology helps in the learning process. Teachers should use many technological techniques when introducing subject matter. Technology makes learning fun. Technology motivates the student to learn. Technology brings life into subject matter that some seem boring. Technology enhances student's reception to material they think is hard.

    6. Disadvantages of Technology in the Classrooms Expensive Students loose hands on experience Students do not gain social skills Literacy skills are not gained Emotional skills are not fully developed Critical Thinking skills are not acquired Cognitive skills are not fully gained Safety of the students can not all ways be monitored

    Disadvantages of Technology
    7. Disadvantage .Moments Technology is not all ways a good way to promote learning.Technology has it set backs. Technology is expensive and is not manageable in urban communities. Technology is not measurable in assessing students’ success Literacy should be master before technology should be integrated in classroom instruction.

Conclusion Technology has its pros and its cons like any other instructional tool. Literacy should be promoted and gained before students are released to interact with the technology in the classroom. If students are set free to learn with technology, the teacher must make sure that students are utilizing technology in the proper way. I think technology assist teachers to create fun and interactive lesson plans. I think that students could benefit more from technology than not using it at all. SMART boards help teachers in their instruction time. Teachers are managing their instructional time with technology in the classroom. Technology has more pros than cons.

  31. The specialization in Language, Literacy, and Technology prepares scholars to carry out research in a broad range of areas related to language and literacy development, the use of information and communication technology in education, and the intersection of technology use and language/literacy development.

Students in this specialization will take course work on or independently investigate topics such as second language learning, reading and writing development, the use of computers and the Internet in language or literacy instruction, online learning, videogames and learning, and the development of information and multimedia literacy, focusing on both school and out-of school settings. Students in the specialization will have the opportunity to develop expertise in a broad range of research methodologies, from video case study to experimentation to ethnography to discourse analysis.

Applicants to this specialization will ordinarily have had prior coursework or experience in areas such as language learning, applied linguistics, TESOL, literacy, instructional technology, or educational media. We expect that graduates in this specialization will seek academic positions or research appointments in a wide range of fields or departments, such as education, English, applied linguistics, curriculum and instruction, educational technology, language and literacy, and TESOL.

  32. All technology influences language, in ways that are not always obvious. The development of transport systems, for example, leads people to move around so that language forms used in regional varieties may move into other regions. We use a metaphor such as "all guns blazing" to suggest the idea of an action performed with energy or aggression - so the technology of weapons extends the usage of everyday speech or writing.

Since technology is a means to extend man's reach, then it is necessarily connected to language, in the sense that both natural languages and technologies will be important in enabling us to do all sorts of things in almost any area of human activity. For example, we use aeroplanes to fly people and goods around the world. And we try to make this safer and more efficient by developing an air-traffic control system. That's language and technology working together for the common good. (And English is the language used in that system globally.)

  35. Technology has affected society and its surroundings in a number of ways. In many societies, technology has helped develop more advanced economies (including today's global economy) and has allowed the rise of a leisure class. Many technological processes produce unwanted by-products, known as pollution, and deplete natural resources, to the detriment of Earth's environment. Various implementations of technology influence the values of a society and new technology often raises new ethical questions. Examples include the rise of the notion of efficiency in terms of human productivity, a term originally applied only to machines, and the challenge of traditional norms.

Philosophical debates have arisen over the present and future use of technology in society, with disagreements over whether technology improves the human condition or worsens it. Neo-Luddism, anarcho-primitivism, and similar movements criticise the pervasiveness of technology in the modern world, opining that it harms the environment and alienates people; proponents of ideologies such as transhumanism and techno-progressivism view continued technological progress as beneficial to society and the human condition. Indeed, until recently, it was believed that the development of technology was restricted only to human beings, but recent scientific studies indicate that other primates and certain dolphin communities have developed simple tools and learned to pass their knowledge to other generations.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Technology and society or technology and culture refers to cyclical co-dependence, co-influence, co-production of technology and society upon the other (technology upon culture, and vice-versa). This synergistic relationship occurred from the dawn of humankind, with the invention of simple tools and continues into modern technologies such as the printing press and computers. The academic discipline studying the impacts of science, technology, and society and vice versa is called (and can be found at) Science and technology studies.

  37. Technology has increased dramatically. People say technology is taking over, which is true. Is that a bad thing? I started to think maybe technology has a negative effect on us and we don’t even know. This topic caught my eye and I became interested to know if it’s possible for technology to rewire our brains. This is how my topic came about. Does technology change our brains and society, and if it does, how?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Technology makes everything faster and easier which is why we use it so much. "I started to think maybe technology has a negative effect on us and we don’t even know." I agree technology is very helpful and makes life a lot easier but we need to be careful and not become obsessed with it or rely on technology too much.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think that it is nor good or bad, but rather both. My viewpoint on this topic is that Technology is changing how our brains work, symbolically and physiologically. Furthermore, even with schools people are getting answers off the Internet and aren’t thinking for themselves anymore. In addition, the Internet can promote quick reading, plus rushed and distracted thinking. On the other hand, we've survived more essential change to how we assess and access information. Among the differences between the Pros and Cons, the Web promotes many things that could be used for the opposite reason, creates information abundance that can become information overload, and allows for the creativity of young people, but then undermining the adults, etc. “The Internet and digital technologies are reshaping our culture, economy and society in most ways for the better. As with previous revolutions driven by technology, whether it is the rise of literate and scientific culture with the spread of the printing press or the economic and social globalization that followed the invention of the telegraph, what matters now is not the new capabilities we have, but how we turn those capabilities, both technical and social, into opportunities.”

  40. The state of society today is a manifestation of the brilliance and power of humankind.
Necessities of the past have been long removed from the worries of today as inventions and innovations came into play. Dreams and wishful thoughts of people in history are paraded asmilestones of the 21 st century. Change, the only constant thing in the world, occurred and hasbeen integrated throughout various sectors of the social order.
